Credner Glacier via Shira including night at Crater Rim

Difficulty rating :
Approximate length in kilometres:  63km

The Credner Glacier is offered to private groups only and takes 9 days 8 nights to complete plus two additional nights spent at the Naura Springs Hotel Arusha.

The Kilimanjaro Climbing Company is the only mountain outfitter to offer this route.  The route involves elements of technical climbing and only those with a degree of technical mountaineering ability and experience at altitude should attempt this route.  Groups are kept small and special permission has to be gained from the Kilimanjaro Park Authorities before undertaking the route.  The route offers ample time to acclimatise and 3 nights are spent above 5000 metres.  The route is dangerous and involves ice climbing and abseiling.  The route is classed as a Grade II Climb (Scottish Grading System).

The route begins at Moran Peak and approaches the mountain via the North Western side. The Shira Plateau is crossed and the route joins Lemosho briefly before diverting to Moir Hut.  After Moir Hut the chances of seeing any other groups are slim as the route ascends the mountain on its northern side to Lent Crew Camp and the base of the Credner Glacier.  The route changes all the time due to the melting glaciers and time has to be spent to find a way across the crevasses and melting ice.  Once across the glacier an abseil is set up and a descent is made to the Crater Rim where a night is spent before going for the summit.  Descent is via Mweka Route with a camp at either Millennium or Mweka camp during the descent.
