Rongai Route

Difficulty rating :
Approximate length in kilometres:  66km

The Rongai route is offered as a 7 day, 6 night trek with two additional nights spent at the Naura Springs Hotel Arusha. We run fixed date open group treks on the route throughout the year and the route is also available for private group bookings.  Extra days on the mountain can be added for those booking private trips.

The Rongai Route is fairly inaccessible compared to other routes on Kilimanjaro and the drive from Arusha to the Rongai gate takes around 4 hours.  Over a period of 7 days the routes offers ample time to acclimatise.

The Rongai route starts on the North Eastern side of Kilimanjaro close to the border with Kenya.  The route is one of the quietist on Kilimanjaro and in low season you can almost guarantee you won’t meet another group until arriving at Kibo Hut.  The Rongai route also offers one of the best chances to see wildlife and it is not unusual to see one of the species of monkey that inhabits the forest, buffalo drinking from the streams and on very rare occasion’s elephants.  The route passes close to Mawenzi before joining the Marangu route at Kibo Hut and ascending to Gilman’s point before heading for Uhuru Peak.  Descent is via the Marangu Route with a night spent at Horombo Hut before heading to Marangu Gate.
