Routes
Kilimanjaro has 6 main trekking routes, Lemosho, Machame, Umbwe, Rongai, Marangu
and Shira. For the more experienced mountaineer the Kilimanjaro Climbing Company
(KCC) also offers scrambles and climbs on the Western Breach and the Credner Glacier.
Each route has something different to offer and each route suits trekkers with different
abilities. The hardest trekking route on the mountain is the Umbwe route and for
those who don’t enjoy camping the Marangu route offers accommodation in huts. The
Lemosho route offers the best chance to acclimatise due to its length and the ascent
and descent over the duration of the expedition. The Rongai route offers the best
chance to experience the wildlife surrounding Kilimanjaro and the Machame route takes
in some of the most famous geological features on the mountain while offering a good
chance to acclimatise.
When booking you have the option of joining a group on one of our fixed date trips
throughout the year or organising a private group with the option of adding extra
days, a camp at the crater rim or a once in the life time exploration of the Northern
Ice Fields.
As well as the 6 main trekking routes Kilimanjaro also has a total of
17 technical ascent routes. These are seldom used by visitors to the mountain and
many have been unclimbed since the 1970’s. Many of the routes are not in good condition
due to the decreasing glaciers. The KCC does offer support for individuals or groups
wishing to climb these routes.
