Western Breach via Shira including night at Crater Rim
Difficulty rating :
Approximate length in kilometres: 56km
The Western Breach Route is also known as the Arrow Glacier Route or the Great Western
Arch. The route is offered as an 8 day 7 night trek/scramble with two additional
nights spent at the Naura Springs Hotel Arusha. We run fixed date open group treks
on the route throughout the year with many summit dates tying in with the full moon
on Kilimanjaro. Extra days on the mountain can be added for those booking private
trips.
Due to the length of trip, and the ascent and descent over its duration the Western
Breach route gives those undertaking it ample time to acclimatise. The route is
at the lower end of the technical ability scale but at the very high end of the trekking
scale. We have classed the route as a difficult scramble. Although the route does
not require technical ability harnesses and ropes can be advantageous and are optional
on the route.
The route begins at Moran Peak and approaches the mountain via the North Western
side. The Shira Plateau is crossed and the route joins Lemosho briefly before diverting
to Moir Hut for acclimatisation purposes. The route then ascends to the Lava Tower
and onward to Arrow Glacier Hut which is situated at the base of the Western Breach.
The route also encompasses a night on the crater rim giving time to explore the
crater and the glaciers. Descent is via Mweka Route with a camp at either Millennium
or Mweka camp during the descent.
